Contemporary Look Flooring

Contemporary look floors are characterized by a lack of natural features such as wild grain, knots, burls, sap inclusions or streaks. These generally have more uniform wood colour though still allowing a small amount of sapwood.  These floors lend themselves to more formal, less ‘busy’ appearing room settings.

In this collection, you will find more BC manufactured, select grade, American White Oak which has the added feature of being available in long lengths.

Uniformity vs Blotching

Blotching can occur even in ‘clean’ graded flooring in areas where the wood grain is very open at the surface thereby absorbing more stain than the surrounding areas.  This condition most often occurs in patches where the grain direction is reversed and can not always be predicted or identified while the product is un-finished.  To avoid blotching, which for some is objectionable, considerable preparatory processing is done to carefully seal the surface.   We then use different stain densities to colour, before finishing with protective coatings.

Preparatory treatment and alternate staining techniques dramatically reduce blotching to provide a more consistent and uniform color.
